biography

Jonathan Mantell-Johnson is a graphic designer and artist based out of San Diego, California. He is originally from Boston, Massachusetts but earned his BFA at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He relocated to San Diego in August of 2014.

Using photography, video, and other forms of digital graphics, Jonathan’s work investigates how visual representation and stimulation warp perceptions and influence ideologies. His work is a means to confront the viewer on their own perceptions of what constitutes “normal” and how spectacle is used to transfix and distract. His work questions the classist and heteronormative values that permeate mass visual communication and bring to light the inherent bias found in everyday media.

Jonathan’s work has been included in many group exhibitions at San Diego State University. In April of 2021, the SDSU Art Council selected Jonathan for a Student Ambassadors' Award.
